HEROES: HIP HOP SAVED MY LIFE!
AT THE SAN DIEGO MUSEUM OF ART (Copley Auditorium) IN BALBOA PARK
July 16-18 (Fri-Sat-Sun) @ 7PM each night

A collaboration of bkSOUL and Collective Purpose, Hip Hop Saved My Life is a celebration of Hip Hop through spoken word, dance, music, and art! With the familiar background of beats, music, and lyrics, Heroes: Hip Hop Saved My Life! is simultaneously a critique of, and a tribute to, the space, voice, and progressive nature of America's newest indigenous art form: Hip Hop. This program is a dynamic and moving presentation of body and soul, imploring the audience to undergo a fantastic journey from the beginning of the underground Hip Hop movement to its current mainstream appeal.

First shown at Sushi Performance & Visual Art last spring, the latest rendition of Hip Hop Saved My Life will pay tribute to some of the foundational artists of the Hip Hop scene. Celebrating the heroes of Hip Hop: DJ Kool Herc, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lauryn Hill, Crazy Legs (Richard Colon) and MC Lyte, Hip Hop itself is also hoisted to a pedastal as a hero in the resistance of urban culture to succomb to mainstream pressure to assimilate. Infusing messages of progress and hope in the lyrics and the dancers movement, the performance addresses pop culture undertones of racism, misogyny, violence, & mindless entertainment present in mainstream music.

This performance run is full of new twists and turns, as well as special guests. Without spoiling the surprise, we are told that an actual Hip Hop Hero will be part of the show. Who knows who it will be...don't miss this pivotal and important representation of an insider's view and love for this urban art form!

This performance is presented in conjunction with the Heroes: Mortals & Myths in Ancient Greece exhibit at SDMA.
